Opinions on Ottawa Midwives Wanted! :)

Anticipating a good result on Friday, I’m trying to decide which set of midwives to phone this time. Last time I was with The Midwifery Group of Ottawa and, while I was extremely happy with the pregnancy care and the postpartum care, events that occurred during the birth left me somewhat less confident in them.

Does anyone who reads here have experiences with the Midwifery Collective? Are they “medwives”?

Feel free to contact me directly, if you’d prefer to not post your experiences here: “melissa.dimock @ gmail.com”

Edited to add: I promise that there will be a non-pregnancy related post soonish. Really. I’m merely obsessing at the moment.  For one, I still have my Torchwood: Children of Earth review to do! And the Philips Sonicare For Kids product review! And some pissing and moaning about how Ikea seems determined to undermine my decorating schmatics!

I think with either of them, it depends on which midwives you get. With Amy I had Jan / Celine, with Celine being much more of a medwife. With Gryphon I had Diane and Theresa, and both were pretty earthy birthy hippies (Yay!!) but their student was a bit more medwife/interventionist. Good luck?

I had Celine w/ #2 and I really, really liked her. That said, my second (who shall remain nameless) seemed to rather take over during the birth. I didn’t care for that, nor the aftermath, nor the general “birthing circus” environment that surrounded us giving birth in hospital. In hindsight, I wish I had pushed for the homebirth anyway, as I was 99% sure there was no “good” reason for a hospital birth. :p

Am older and wiser this time and much less likely to be cowed. At same time, would prefer to not be in situation where I have to fight for what I want.

I was very happy with Celine, and am not sure I’d like the bongo-drumming granola types (just to flippantly toss around some horrible stereotypes)

I was very happy w/ her too, and w/ Kim (my 2nd, who went on mat leave before our birth). The whole hospital experience still has me really leery, though – as do some recent things I’ve heard re: general practices through the Group.

I had one who no longer works in Ottawa (moved to London) for my first pregnancy and she helped me through that nightmare. She was great.

For this one I called both places as soon as I got the positive result and didn’t get a call back until I was 19 weeks along. I only got a call from the Midwifery Group. The midwives in Ottawa are busier than ever before.

Yeah, I was looking at the waiting lists. Holy crud.

I went through the Collective and since they were re-shuffling staff and everyone was booking their vacations for around my due date, I saw EVERYONE there. My #1 was on vacation when I gave birth a month early so my #3 took over and she was AMAZING. There was really only one woman there that we didn’t feel comfortable with because of being too pushy but she is no longer there. Email me if you want more specifics.
