It’s that time of year — dry skin and scratchy lips are a couple things I really dislike about winter. This recipe puts a bit of shimmer back into your smile while moisturizing your skin. It’s simple to blend and makes a lot, so be sure to pass on the bounty to your friends and family!
What You Need:
- a glass measuring cup
- a small whisk
- several small jars or containers
- measuring spoons
- cheese grater, for grating the beeswax
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup jojoba oil
- 1/4 cup grapeseed oil
- 3.5 tbsp grated beeswax
- 24 drops peppermint essential oil
1. Combine the jojoba oil, grapeseed oil and beeswax together in the glass measuring cup. Place in microwave and heat in 20 second increments, whisking in between, until the beeswax has melted and the ingredients are well-blended.
2. Remove from microwave and whisk in the essential oil.
3. Pour the solution into the containers and allow to harden uncovered until cooled.
4. Label your handiwork and pass along the extras to your friends and family!

This is great! I tried to make my own lip balm last year, but didn’t like the quality of the beeswax I got… Do you buy yours local? Do you know a good online supplier?
I obtained mine through a barter with a friend — it’s fairly unrefined and is still slightly sticky from honey. New Directions Aromatics is a well-known cosmetic ingredients supply source: http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.ca/beeswax-block-purified-yellow-100-natural-p-1605.html
Thank you! I’ll check it out!

I would love to try this i have a serious lip balm habit as is! Seems very simple, just need to figure out where to get the oils. Thanks!
You should be able to get them in the natural foods section at Loblaws. If not, try Planet Botanix on Bank St.
Just found your blog! I love your purge 2011 tracking. : )
Love this lip balm project – will have to try! Thanks!
I’m excited to try. Where do you get your containers?
how many pots does this make?
Oh this is perfect….you can get refillable containers at your grocery store in the pharmacy or in the dollar store…small and easy to carry in your jean pocket. My son uses just vaseline in these little containers but this is one I’m definitely trying!!!
CAN you tell me where to get the beeswax from?
THANKS!
I’ve gotten containers at the Dollar Store, reused small jam jars and Altoids tins — how many containers it makes depends completely on the size of the container you pour it into.
I got my beeswax in barter from a friend, but you can buy it online from many different places. Do a Google search for your location and honey producers — most also sell their beeswax.
I bought mine at Health Store (where you can get pills & vitamins). They worked out great! I love the smell. Side note: add more peppermint for a stronger smell. Smell wasn’t that strong. Also- anyone know how to change the color of the chapstick. I tried to use food coloring and it came out all “dotty”.
Is there a cheaper alternative to the jojoba oil?
Apricot kernel or sweet almond oil would work as well.
